Canada Day Celebrations at McCrae House - July 01, 2010
On July 1st we were, for the first time, at the McCrae House historical museum in Guelph, ON. McCrae House is the birthplace and former home of physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, who wrote the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" during WWI.
The event was visited by about 800 people, and it was busy all day long, with lots of wonderful heritage displays as well as singing and dancing happening on a small stage. The hosts were very welcoming and even provided lunch for us and a birthday cake for the guests. To complement our 1812-period re-enactors, craft displays and wigwam, there was also the 41st Regiment of Foot, War of 1812 re-enactors, and the Charwell Landing Party, Royal Navy 1812. WWI and WWII re-enactors were also present, as well as a display by two Canadian Forces Medics of the modern era.
Many guests came to discuss finger weaving and porcupine quill work with Rainbow Weaver (Heather) and Dark Pool (Lynn). Strides (Chris) showed how to make a winter leather shirt, using a moose hide, while Kelli demonstrated the making of a twill bag. Big Fish (Dale) spent a lot of time discussing the history of First Nations people, and helped guests with all their questions. Near the end of the day, we sang on stage for 30 minutes in front of a lively crowd, with the children helping us by playing the shakers.
All-in-all, we really love these small community events, and it was a great way to spend July 1st, Canada Day!
