"Celebrate Barrie" - June 05, 2010

This year was the 11th annual Celebrate Barrie community festival along the lovely shore of Kempenfelt Bay, and it was once again very well attended by the community. The historical encampment was made up of many groups and individuals, including members of the Incorporated Militia of Upper, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and the Glengarry Light Infantry. Sutler Cyrus, a cooper, a surgeon, and blacksmith Les Stanley also participated in the event, to name just a few. And of course the "Zoom Daddies" were there to sing their campy songs. It was also great to see our friends, and drum-circle collaborators, Judy and Dave Glen of Glen Farms there!

Although rain threatened a bit before the day started, it turned out to be a great (if somewhat blustery) day! In fact, the top blew off of the wigwam a few times, but the sun came out on queue to warm the drums enough so they wouldn't be "flubby".

We were scheduled to drum and sing 4 times that day; as well as participate in a couple of military tactical / blackpowder musket demonstrations.

A highlight for Gerry, Chris, and Dale was going out for a paddle on Kempenfelt Bay in a Voyageur / Canot du Nord (North Canoe), courtesy of some Barrie Canoe and Kayak Club members! Gerry was gouvernail for our trip (the guy steering in the stern) and he took a little too much pleasure in guiding us close to the fountain on the way out and back!

The photos below were taken by Patricia ("Pat") Bromley, a friend of Strides who stopped by our encampment for a visit. Much thanks, Pat, for the use of the great photos!
